Hedgewars in Browser: Guide & Verified Status

Hedgewars has a reported browser port called WebWars, but our host request did not establish a running game. Unlike unidentified cover candidates, this entry has a project repository and an author’s community post with specific controls and known limitations. The author describes local hotseat play, unfinished multiplayer work, and missing mobile controls. We attribute those statements and keep transfer-size and performance claims separate from an actual session.

The WebWars author documents hotseat controls, no mobile controls, and unfinished multiplayer. Our host check failed; reported loading sizes conflict, so no fixed transfer total is verified.

How to play Hedgewars: four checks

  1. Inspect the external entry. The WebWars author documents hotseat controls, no mobile controls, and unfinished multiplayer. Our host check failed; reported loading sizes conflict, so no fixed transfer total is verified.
  2. Read the loader rather than guessing a wait time. The author reports a small core package with themes loaded separately, while the repository contains conflicting first-load totals. Total transferred bytes, load duration, and runtime performance have not been measured here. A browser app can transfer files even when no installer is needed. No 10–30 second estimate is established for this entry. Read the author’s reported hotseat setup before expecting a network lobby. Core and theme packaging information is not a measured loading timer, and the conflicting totals should not be converted into a fixed wait estimate.
  3. If the reported WebWars host becomes available, follow its documented local hotseat setup: two teams sharing one keyboard. The author’s post identifies that mode; network multiplayer is work in progress and is not a session we verified.
  4. Author-reported hotseat controls: arrow keys to move, Enter to jump, Space to fire, and right-click to select a weapon.

What to expect

We’re playing / version
WebWars is a community Hedgewars browser-port project documented by apmlabs and a Hedgewars community author. No gameplay session has been verified.
Performance
The author reports a small core package with themes loaded separately, while the repository contains conflicting first-load totals. Total transferred bytes, load duration, and runtime performance have not been measured here.
Multiplayer
The author describes two-team local hotseat play and multiplayer as work in progress; the suggested cross-PC behavior was not actually tested by the author or by this site.
Mobile
The author reports that mobile controls are not implemented and Safari does not work. These are project-reported limits, not our independent device tests.

About this browser version

WebWars is documented by the apmlabs/webwars repository and a post on the Hedgewars community site. The author describes a Pascal-to-C conversion using pas2c, followed by an Emscripten WebAssembly build. The project also discusses a Node bridge between WebSockets and TCP.

The community post identifies hotseat play with two teams sharing one keyboard. Arrow keys, Enter, Space, and right-click are documented there as controls. The author reports missing mobile controls and a Safari limitation; network multiplayer remains work in progress rather than a verified public match.

Loading information has changed over time, and the repository contains inconsistent first-load totals. We therefore do not promise a fixed 7 MB or 190 MB first transfer. Our own host request failed, so package descriptions and author-reported behavior remain distinct from measured gameplay.

A later verification should separate the host becoming reachable from a completed hotseat match and from online multiplayer. Those are different milestones in the author’s description. It should also measure the actual requested packages rather than choosing one of the conflicting first-load totals. That would make both loading and mode-status updates useful without implying that unfinished networking or absent phone controls were fixed.

Engine basis
The author documents Pascal source converted through pas2c to C and compiled with Emscripten for WebAssembly. The project also describes a Node WebSocket-to-TCP bridge.
